Key Ideas: On The Shortness Of Life

Key Ideas

1. Life is long enough when it is well used

The problem is not only the number of years available but whether time is directed towards purposes worthy of a life.

2. Time is more valuable than property

Money and possessions may be recovered. An hour cannot be restored, yet people often guard it less carefully.

3. Busyness is not the same as living

Continuous activity can conceal the absence of direction. A person may complete endless tasks without possessing the purpose of those tasks.

4. Postponement wastes the present

Plans to begin living later depend upon an uncertain future and allow current habits of distraction to remain unchallenged.

5. Power may increase dependence

Rank and success often create more obligations, fears and expectations. External advancement does not guarantee ownership of time.

6. Long existence is not necessarily a long life

Age measures duration rather than deliberate living. Many years can pass without becoming meaningfully one’s own.

7. The present requires attention

The moment of action passes rapidly. Anxiety about the future and absorption in appetite prevent it from being consciously used.

8. Honest memory gathers the past

A well-directed life can revisit earlier experience without avoidance and integrate it into a coherent understanding of the self.

9. Philosophy extends a single lifetime

Conversation with earlier thinkers gives access to insights accumulated across generations and enlarges present judgement.

10. Learning should serve wisdom rather than display

Facts and scholarship become another distraction when they do not improve the use of time, desire and mortality.

11. Genuine leisure is active and deliberate

Leisure means freedom for reflection and chosen purposes, not simply the absence of employment or the presence of entertainment.

12. Important duties still require boundaries

Service to others can be valuable without claiming the whole life. No social role should make a person permanently unavailable to herself.
